shitty Dren sketch

saw Splice last week and really enjoyed it. the ending felt kinda...i dunno, rushed, haphazard? but it's one of those types of movies that would be really difficult to end perfectly. so i forgive it. the best part is, of course, Dren. oh, and i usually despise any kind of romance/sex in movies, but this movie has probably the best, hottest sex scene ever in it. that's all i'll say. :p

i only kind of half-assed references so i'm sure this is probably riddled with inaccuracies. maybe i'll finish this at some point. i love Dren SO MUCH so i'd really like to do a finished drawing of her. but ya know. COMICS.

don't nobody know my troubles

just as i finally finished my Dinogeddon script and was beginning to draw, my computer died on me. i guess my ram is the culprit. gonna have to wait a few weeks to get a new one, can't afford it right now.

refusing to admit defeat, i'm borrowing rob's computer for now and hooked my tablet up to it, ready to explode the pages out that have been building up inside me the past few days, only to find my tablet won't work right for some reason. i fucking hate this shitty tablet, goddamn.

also going to have to work more in order to save up cash, which = less drawing time. ugh. i still refuse to admit defeat at this early stage, but i'm beginning to sweat and feel like it will be a fucking miracle if i have this stupid comic done and printed in time for the Toronto expo i hope to attend in august.

also dealing with a bunch of heinous body image issue nonsense.

forgot to mention, but i finally watched Dead Snow with my brother at his suggestion. it was pretty good; nothing too new or revolutionary (except nazi zombies + a zombie story taking place in the snow, i guess), but it was pretty entertaining for what it was. it was fun. i really liked the intestine rope part.

i lied about not writing about personal, mopey stuff anymore.

dreams of heads falling off

i've been working on this for so long in some form or another that i don't really have anything left to say about it. other than i really like drawing deserts and i'm happy i'm working on a comic that takes place in mostly desert. and i guess also that i dedicate this to Salem; it was the piece i was working on and struggling the most with while she was sick and i lost her.

finally saw Kiki's Delivery Service for the first time yesterday (yes, i know, what kind of studio Ghibli/Miyazaki fan am i?).  it was really great, as expected. probably in my top favorite Miyazaki films now, after Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away. i love the character of Kiki so much, and related to her maybe a little more than i'd like to admit, heheh. and i love the way Studio Ghibli does those super-stylized, cute cats.

take my hand, Paree

I love the movie "Gay Purr-ee." For those who don't know, it's an animated film written and produced by Chuck Jones (of Looney Toons fame) released by UPA in...1962, I believe? It's sort of a classic romantic comedy musical set in Gay Nineties France, but starring cats. I saw it on tv as a kid and became obsessed with it (it may be what started my France obsession? haha) until I managed to procure it on VHS as a teenager. And now fortunately we live in the future where everything is on the internet. See the whole movie here: http://www.trilulilu.ro/iculici/5003b2306f146c

The voice acting is just superb. There's the incomparable Robert Goulet, Red Buttons, and I absolutely adore Paul Frees as the villain. But most of all, there's the wonderful Judy Garland as the lead, Mewsette. The wonderfully written music in this film is made even more unforgettable by her legendary voice.

Even more than the voice acting, I just love Chuck Jones's animation and art direction. He's one of my heroes, and I really consider this one of his masterpieces. It even cost him his contract to Warner Bros., but he still made it. The backgrounds alone are just gorgeous to look at, and resemble the impressionistic painting styles popular when the movie takes place. I love the contrast of the Van Gogh-esque countryside to the cityscape of Paris resembling the work of Lautrec. This one scene alone is enough to make art history buffs cream their pants: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_CvqjjNjUU

fucking beautiful!

I'd REALLY like to have the LP from the movie. The cover is a sweet piece of design work as well!
